About A470 Soaring

This is the blog for a few guys who spend their time flying radio controlled gliders, or slope soarer's, from the many and varied slopes around SE Wales.

This usually begins at the northern end of Cardiff, driving north up the A470 up to the Heads of the Valley's and the southern fringe of the Brecon Beacons. But the A470 road continues its windy way all the way to N Wales.

There are many slopes available for most wind directions, the most famous being the area between Nant-y-Moel and Treorchi known as The Bwlch, which has some of the best slopes and flying in Europe with many F3F competitions being held there each year and visited by many fliers from Europe and around the world. At 1500 feet (450m) above sea level, there is usually more wind than not, and certainly more than at sea level.

If you require any further information, are new to slope soaring or are visiting the area, please contact Steve at steve.houghton59@gmail.com . I look forward to hearing from you.

Sunday on Fochriw

Well firstly, thank you to Marc from Slope Soaring Sussex for coming along today and joining in with the flying fun. I think he had an easy introduction to Welsh flying as we were unable to fly at the Bwlch due to the Welsh Open F3F championships taking place there.

We had to share the Fochriw slope with a load of paragliders and hang gliders, but we all got on ok and there were no incidences.

The wind on my arrival was probably about 18 mph but quickly dropped by a good 10 mph and we were struggling to fly anything other than a few foamies.

Here are a few pics.

  1. It was a beautiful sunny late summer/early autumn day, ok the wind did drop but it was so pleasant up there....even the paragliders wete tolerable. ..

I was well pleased with Josh's first visit to the slopes which he thoroughly enjoyed, he's now looking for his own model ( wants a Spook ) If he is still so enthusiastic after a couple more visits Steve I'll buy the Speccy off you.

  2. Josh did very well Phil. I do have a new antenna for the Spekkie, which I must get around to fitting. As you know, it is fitted with a 2000ma Eneloop pack, has a charger and I think I have an Orange RX in my box as well that I'll throw in. Along with the Spook you could have him in the air for well under £100.
