About A470 Soaring

This is the blog for a few guys who spend their time flying radio controlled gliders, or slope soarer's, from the many and varied slopes around SE Wales.

This usually begins at the northern end of Cardiff, driving north up the A470 up to the Heads of the Valley's and the southern fringe of the Brecon Beacons. But the A470 road continues its windy way all the way to N Wales.

There are many slopes available for most wind directions, the most famous being the area between Nant-y-Moel and Treorchi known as The Bwlch, which has some of the best slopes and flying in Europe with many F3F competitions being held there each year and visited by many fliers from Europe and around the world. At 1500 feet (450m) above sea level, there is usually more wind than not, and certainly more than at sea level.

If you require any further information, are new to slope soaring or are visiting the area, please contact Steve at steve.houghton59@gmail.com . I look forward to hearing from you.

Rebuild of the Thermal Instinct Wing

Back in the summer I had an ooops moment when I misjudged the height of my Thermal Instinct, 3m F5J model, and I made contact with a tree.

Well now that my other rebuild projects are done, the Moth has been built, and I'm waiting for Traplet to release the Douglas A4 Skyhawk plan and wood pack, (for the PSSA mass build project), I thought I'd get on and rebuild the wing on the Thermal Instinct.

This is one of the panels, the opposite one is nowhere near as bad.

Well I thought I was going to have to painstakingly cut out individual wing ribs, but my Facebook friend, Armin Zander from Germany, informed me that Hollein, (the models supplier in Germany) provide a rib kit, at a cost of €42. So I have been in touch and a rib kit should be winging, (pardon the pun) its way to me next week.

So with any luck, this should be flying again by the time the warmer weather of spring arrives in S Wales.

  2. Hi, Thanks for sharing your rebuild. I was wondering how much the kit was and did you buy it from Germany? I ordered one from Hollein in Germany and for 160 euros all that just arrived were the three main wing carbon fiber spars! no kit. thanks ! Paul

  3. Hi Paul

I bought my Thermal Instinct already built as a used model. I've been on the Hollein website but it isn't there so I think it has been superseded by the Inside F5J which sells for €184.90 inc VAT.

    You will find it here.
